AMERICANS REMAIN COMMITTED TO NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Lightspeed’s Mobile Panelists Focus on Weight Loss Related Goals in 2017

Warren, NJ (February 17, 2017) – Lightspeed’s Mobile Pulse Poll participants are still going strong eight weeks into the new year with their 2017 New Year’s resolutions. According to the January 2017 study, 62% of respondents made a resolution and 92% of those individuals have maintained their momentum.

Out of the respondents who made resolutions this year, 48% committed to weight loss related goals.  This mimics iQanti’s findings between January and October of 2016.  NBC News reports iQuanti found that consumers made 62,776,640 (or 39%) Google searches regarding “getting healthy” for New Year resolutions, by far the largest category of resolution searches. They report that consumers are becoming more specific with their searches; health related resolution searches were from people looking to become fit, not just healthy. To support this, iQuanti recorded a 315 percent increase in the search term “gym”, and Lightspeed’s Mobile Pulse Poll reflects that. Out of the 33% of respondents that have gym memberships, 23% reported to holding a membership for less than one year and 22% of memberships are new to 2017. In addition, 5% of all January respondents do not currently hold gym memberships, but they plan on joining within the month.

Further key survey findings include:

  • Gym Commitment: Out of those who confirmed they have gym memberships, 43% report using the membership 2-3 times per week, and 27% report using it 4-6 times per week
  • Gym Memberships: 41% of respondents report they do not own gym memberships, but exercise on their own instead; 20% report they don’t own memberships or exercise much
  • Resolutions: In addition to improving overall fitness, 6% committed to quitting smoking and 3% made resolutions to reduce or quit their alcohol consumption
