OFFICE WORKERS ‘FALL’ OUT OF FITNESS IN THE AUTUMN
October 12, 2016
Only 25% Feel They’re Most Active in the Fall; 49% Sit Between Seven to Nine Hours a Day
As the weather turns cooler, more people are finding themselves becoming less active. And for people who work in an office, the fall season leads to a sharp decline in activity. A recent Lightspeed Mobile Pulse Poll of U.S. consumers who work desk jobs reveals that while 50% of respondents believe themselves to be most active in the summer time, only 25% believe they are most active in the fall.
In addition to considering themselves less active in the fall season, many respondents (82%) report they’re also pretty inactive in the workplace sitting between four and nine hours per day with 49% of those individuals claiming they sit a staggering seven to nine hours per day. This summer, a study of over 1 million people published in The Lancet found that one hour of physical activity per day may eliminate the increased risk of death associated with sitting for eight hours a day. While the majority of Lightspeed’s Mobile Pulse Poll respondents sit for a significant length of time, 85% did report they actively get up to stand or walk several times a day.
Further key survey findings include:
- Commuting: 40% of respondents spend 15 to 30 minutes commuting to work and 25% spend less than 15 minutes
- Remote working: 22% of survey participates report they work from home sporadically, 47% never work from home and 17% work from home all five days
- Inactive season: Only 4% of respondents report they are most active in the winter months
Note to editors: Survey conducted September 2016 on Lightspeed’s Mobile Pulse Poll; 455 respondents age 18+.
